It's the kind of comeback every kid dreams about. Sutherland trailed Batavia by eight points with three minutes to go, but the Knights kept fighting and Jason Corletta made a jumper with 1.6 seconds remaining to give Sutherland a 53-52 win in the Class A Final at Blue Cross Arena Saturday night. Pat O'Keefe made a long three to cut the lead down to five. The Blue Devils struggled at the free throw line down the stretch and Sutherland chipped away. A Batavia turnover with 23 seconds to play gave Sutherland a chance trailing by two. Jamie Eggleston drew a foul with six seconds remaining. He made the first free throw, but missed the next. The rebound was tapped out to the free throw line, where Corletta caught, spun and fired. His jumper hit every part of the rim before it dropped in. The Blue Devils had a heave from three quarters court that bounced off the backboard and the front rim before falling out. The other dramatic finish came in the day's first game at Class D. Dave Valle hit a three pointer to break a 42-42 tie with 37 seconds left leading Northstar to a 45-42 win over Prattsburgh. The loss means Prattsburgh coach Jim Burke will remain stuck on 499 wins until next season. At Class AAA, Rush-Henrietta rolled over Hilton 66-34. East won the AA title against Wilson 77-64. It was Charlotte over Freddie Thomas at Class BB 64-54. Fillmore knocked off Elba to win the D title 53-43.
