When Ethan Witkop tells his grandchildren about the 2008 Section Five Class A hockey final, he'll say he scored the game winning goal. But, he might fudge the part about how the puck went in. Witkop's pass in front was deflected by a defenseman's stick over the goaltender's left shoulder and in for a championship winning goal as the Red Raiders defeated Athena/Odyssey 4-3 at the ESL Centre Sunday night. Fairport jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by John-Paul Durso, Anthony VanScott and Cole Bardreau, but they couldn't hold the lead. The Thunder stormed back thanks to Brandon Cheeseman and two goals from Riley Bourbannais, the second of which tied the game in the third period. Fairport will now move on to Saturday's state quarterfinal.
In the battle of Webster, Justin Scharfe scored twice for Thomas as the Titans took a 3-0 lead and never looked back, winning the Class BB Final 4-1 over Schroeder at ESL Centre. Misha Dombovy-Johnson and Brett Bannon also scored for Thomas. David D'Ambrosia had the lone Warrior goal.

Thomas will face McQuaid in the Class B state qualifier Wednesday at ESL. McQuaid defeated Victor 6-1 in the Class B championship Sunday afternoon. Brent Sanderson and Nick Cato each scored twice for the Knights.
