McQuaid Jesuit High School tells News 8 Now it is considering starting a middle school within the City of Rochester. The school, also known as a “Nativity” middle school is a concept leaders at McQuaid say they have been discussing for the last three years and is not necessarily connected to the recent announcement from the Rochester Diocese of 13 Catholic school closings at the end of this year.

“There are about 45 of these schools nationwide,” says Bill Hobbs, president of McQuaid, “the idea began in the early 1970s when the first school was started in the Bronx.”

Hobbs says the middle school, if started, would not be run by McQuaid, however, many members of McQuaid’s board would be involved in the management of the school. The nativity school would target at-risk students in the City of Rochester. Officials say many factors of the school still need to decided upon including resources, support and a person to oversee the school.

“This would not be an academically elite school,” says Hobbs, “but an in-depth application process. If it’s a co-ed school, we would accept 100 to 120 students, however, if it’s a single-sex school we would accept only 10-15 students per grade.”

If it comes to fruition, the nativity middle school would start in September 2009.
