Barb Zelazny, Irondequoit High School

Kids never want to get called to the Assistant Principal's office. But that's not the case with our News 8 Golden Apple Award winner. Barb Zelazny is a well known, friendly face at Irondequoit High School.

Surprising an administrator is never easy but Irondequoit High School Senior Matt Hondorf asked us to. So with the help of Principal Patrick McCue and several members of the Senior class. Assistant Principal Barb Zelazny came right to us. We were hiding around the corner in the school commons.

Barb Zelazny knows Matt and the other Seniors well. She had many in class as an 8th grade teacher, and has followed them all for four years through High School as an Assistant Principal. Matt paid her the ultimate compliment when he told us she is the one person he can run to when he's having trouble. "The past 4 years I've been with her she's always been the person I can go to talk about basically anything."

Principal McCue says "I think it says she understands our role as administrators is to not just be the disciplinarian but it's to also be a friend and a support and a person who is really here for them. That's our number one goal."

Barb says surprises like Matt's are what makes her job special. "You know when people say Assistant Principal, it's not just about detentions and stuff, it's the whole child and having the opportunity to go through these things with these kids it's just a privilege and an honor."

Dear Channel 8,

  Mrs. Zelazny should win the Golden Apple Award because she is always supporting our senior class.  For the past 4 years she has not given up on any one of the 300+ kids in the 2010 class.
  She has a great personality and is the one person I know I can trust and run to when I am having trouble in school or with something else.
