energystarappliances2008-01-17-1200608429.jpgElectricity truly power America.  But ask most people and they'd love to cut back.  For them, it's a pocketbook issue, for the planet it's a health issue.

More than half of the electricity that's produced in this country is coal generated.  That means atmospheric emmissions.  If you use less electricity you'll kill two birds with one stone.  You will lower your bills and reduce pollution.

Charles Voorhees of A Star Energy says, "every home is different and needs to be assessed differently. But you can save quite a bit anywhere from just on lightbulbs alone anywhere from 100 a year to 5-6 hundred a year."

Homeowners may want to consider having an energy audit.  Experts can come into your home and help find the trouble spots.  A lot of heat is lost through roofs, fireplaces, windows and doors.  You can also save by changing over to energy efficient appliances.

Voorhees says, "look for Energy SStar appliances.  If you've got something that is more than 10 years old, you can definately save some energy by changing those out."

Saving energy also means saving money.  52% of the electricity produced in the U.S. comes from coal.  20% is nuclear, 16% is natural gas, and 7% is from hydroelectric plants.
