“How many accidents have to happen before somebody does something?” asks deliveryman Mike Frongetta.
Frongetta is frustrated with the number of trucks that travel Routes 5 and 20 in West Bloomfield.
“It’s a dangerous road at this point. There’s just way too much truck traffic at this point and with the tolls going up it’s only going to get worse,” said Frongetta.
Just six months ago five Fairport High School teens were killed when their car collided head on with a tractor trailer. Although officials determined driver error may have contributed to the accident the county and the stare are keeping their eyes on the road.
“The Ontario County Sheriffs Office works closely with all highway departments including NYS DOT reviewing the highway conditions, reviewing accident reports that occur on highways including routes 5 and 20,” said Sheriff Philip Povero.
Sheriff Povero says despite the high volume of trucks and cars that use the road, the numbers show 5 & 20 is no more dangerous than any other state road.
“The most recent statistical analysis that we've done of accidents in Ontario county show that 5 and 20 generally poses no greater number of motor vehicle accidents than most highways,” said Sheriff Povero.
Mini mart owner Sandy Jackson believes it’s the drivers not the road that makes 5 & 20 dangerous.
“I believe it’s a safe road the problems are the drivers. People are busy their driving too fast, they’re text messaging and their talking on their cell phones. That’s what’s causing problems,” said Jackson.
Despite the numbers, Frongetta, who travel this road every week. wonders whether something can be done to make this road a little safer.
"People are pretty good about obeying speed limits but its just an overused road and theres many overused roads in this part of the state," added Frongetta.
