How do you greet people during the holiday season? With a heartfelt, “Happy Holidays?” Or a traditional, “Merry Christmas”?
“Merry Christmas. Why? Because it’s Christmas day so Merry Christmas works. Happy Holidays is politically correct but Merry Christmas works for me,” said Walt Pegoli.
Elizabeth Reisinger opts for “Happy Holidays”.
“I have friends who are of different religions. A few Jewish friends so I feel like it’s more encompassing,” said Reisinger.
“It’s not just Happy Holidays which is OK, but Happy Holidays just to insult Jesus Christ,” said Bishop Gabriel Hallback.
Bishop Hallback of Plowing the Way to God Ministries thinks "Happy Holidays" is a politically correct insult to Christianity. Hallback says he wants to put the Christ back in Christmas.
“The trend is that to deny Christ because I think that the only reason why some businesses have converted to saying happy holidays and dared their employees to say Merry Christmas cause its all about Christ,” said Hallback.
But not everyone agrees.
“I believe in kind of a pluralistic religious spirit and I think Happy Holidays includes all people,” said Michael Dobkowski.
Hallback is proposing a new greeting for those who might feel pressured or uncomfortable when someone greets you with "Happy Holidays".
“Happy Holy Day” to you too. That's what I want to put out there, “Happy Holy day,” said Hallback.
Some people think it’s a lot of fuss over nothing.
”They’re both great greetings and why make it more complicated?” added John Morse.
