Updated: December 12, 2007
Kevin Everett is the subject of this weeks Sports Illustrated cover story. Among the details of his inspiring rehabilitation contained in the article are the first pictures of Everett doing something once thought impossible. He was walking. Everett is 35 pounds lighter than his playing weight of 260. He still is trying to relearn some of his finer muscle functions like moving his fingers. However, Everett now can lift his arms over his head and walk unaided, slowly, for about 50 yards. According to Everett and the SI article, Bills orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andrew Cappucino is a major reason for Everetts sparkling recovery. Cappucino placed Everett in mild hypothermia hours after the injury... cooling his body to reduce spinal swelling. The treatment is rarely used and still controversial, but Cappucino is convinced is prevented more permanent damage. Everetts attitude is upbeat. Hes thinking about coaching high school football. The article contains an account of the moments after Everetts injury and the thoughts and feelings of friends and family since the moment of impact until today. It can currently be viewed at cnnsi.com.
