“When I left I told him to be safe, you know, there's a lot of things going on out here,” said James Frye. “It's not really a safe neighborhood.”

That was just one week before Abo-Ali was shot and killed during a robbery.

“I still can't believe that he's gone,” Frye said.

Since he was seven years old, Frye came to the mini-mart on

North Street
with his grandmother. He says Abo-Ali was always there for people in the community.

“He's a kind-hearted person,” he said. “Anything you needed, you know, any time you needed him he was there for you.”

And neighbors were there for him Wednesday, including Theresa McAbrew. She's the mother of a murder victim, whose alleged killer, Keon Anderson, was acquitted after witnesses refused to testify back in October.
Anderson is one of three now being charged with Abo-Ali's murder.

“There are a lot of mothers who've been through what we're going through, and (I’m out here) just to ask and plead for help,” McAbrew said.

If witnesses had spoken out about her son's death, Abo-Ali might still be around to help his neighbors, friends and family.
