Fairport firefighters believe a forklift on the freight elevator at Happy Ice in Perinton weighed up to 5000 pounds. But News 8 Now/Fox Rochester obtained a copy of the elevator's inspection records, which says it was designed to hold a maximum weight of 4000 pounds. Two men were trapped when the elevator collapsed early Thursday morning. The elevator was last inspected on November 2nd. Building Inspector Scott Copp, who works for the Town of Perinton, says the inspection didn't find anything mechanically wrong with the elevator. "There appears to be a load test that's required that is overdue. That would've needed to be corrected," he says. "There was a procedural violation apparently for the witnessing of portions of the test by a qualified elevator inspector." It will be up to federal workplace safety iinvestigators to determine whether too much weight caused the accident, or if there were any workplace violations. Investigators will be back on the scene on Friday.
