strong2007-10-30-1193756417.JPGStrong Hospital is making plans to expand its outpatient surgery capacity. The University of Rochester Medical Center has applied to the NYS Health Department to open and operate an off-site ambulatory surgery center.

Strong currently operates its 33 outpatient surgery rooms at capacity on a daily basis. The crunch has made it difficult for hospital staff to accommodate the increasing number of both inpatient and outpatient surgery cases.  Twenty percent of surgical cases are emergency cases at Strong which need to be performed immediately.

“As a result, every day we have patients awaiting elective procedures who are being bumped from the schedule,” says Steven Goldstein, CEO of Strong Memorial Hospital.

If approved, Strong Hospital’s new surgery center would include 10 operating rooms, two procedure rooms as well as space of pre and post-operative care. The 52,000 square foot facility is planned for

180 Sawgrass Drive
off
Westfall Drive
in Brighton. The University will provide $13 million necessary to outfit the ASC with surgical equipment. If approved,Strong will move cases from its existing operating rooms and local surgicenters to the new ASC.
