The commission is in charge of fostering volunteerism and community service initiatives throughout the state.  It provides important funding for nonprofit organizations to run local programs.

Last year alone, 212 participating organizations received grants.

The Community Service Commission has between 15 and 29 voting members and must include representatives from the private, public, not-for-profit, higher education, labor and community sectors and must be comprised of no more than half of one party affiliation.  The commission is part of the State's Office of Children and Family Services.

Silda Spitzer has 11 years of experience with not-for-profits behind her.  In 1996, she founded Children for Children, a NYC not-for-profit that creates opportunities for young people from all backgrounds to get involved in volunteering.
