The Ontario County Sheriff's Department is investigating a fatal crash that killed two people and two horses Sunday.
Police say a man and woman were killed after the vehicle they were riding in collided with two horses that had broken through a fence on a nearby property. It happened on County Road 37 just south of Canadice.
Police say a '93 Saturn was headed south when it hit the horses in the road. One of the horses ended up on top of the vehicle's roof. The weight of the horse ultimately killed two of the three people inside.
Amanda Carey, 21, of Hemlock and 23-year-old Michael Moulthroup of Dansville died at the scene. Police say neither were wearing seat-belts. The driver, 23-year-old David Johnson of Hemlock, was taken to the Strong Hospital with neck injuries. He has since been released.
The horses also died at the scene. The owner of the horses says she was going to feed them when she noticed they had broken through a fence and went into the road. Police say speed did not play a factor and Johnson did make an attempt to brake to avoid the animals.
At this time, no charges have been filed. Police are investigating whether the owner of the horses, Elizabeth Papageorge, will be held liable.
