NYS Legislature back in session

P-DRIVERSSENATEDEBATEB2007-10-22-1193092077.jpgThe New York State Legislature is back in session in Albany this week. And one topic of discussion is Governor Eliot Spitzer's controversial driver's license plan. The Assembly Republicans are calling for a stop to it.

The Assembly Republicans held a press conference just hours ago urging Democrat Majority members to block the Governor's plan, which would give state driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

Assembly Republicans are asking for a debate on the issue. They're urging for support and a vote to stop the governor. And they're hoping to pass legislation that would prevent the Governor from moving forward with the plan.

If they're unsuccessful, the license roll-out would happen in two phases. In December, driver's licenses would be issued to about 152,000 New Yorkers who at one point had a license. Then in April, the rest of the population would be offered the same option.

Coming up at News 8 Now at 6, we'll hear from Assembly Republican Leader Jim Tedisco from Albany and we'll tell you what Democrats have to say on the issue.
