The Rochester Catholic Diocese is joining in the debate over a federal plan to give medical care to poor children. Today the Diocese of Rochester will be joined by local doctors to call on members of congress to pass the SCHIP plan.

Bishop Matthew Clark has already signed a letter urging Republican Representatives Randy Kuhl and Tom Reynolds to support a bill to expand the program.

President Bush says the plan would be too expensive. Congress voted to expand the program, adding $4 million needy children to the $6 million already covered. President Bush vetoed the plan which would cost $35 billion over the next five years. Democrats are trying to overturn the veto, but are 14 votes short.
