Sperr was the state trooper killed in March 2006 after unknowingly pulling over several bank robbery suspects in the southern tier. The governor says he wanted to honor the loved ones left behind, because they sacrifice just as much as fallen officers.

"It was you the parents and grandparents, siblings and other elders who instilled in them the values of selflessness and sacrifice, it was you who stirred something in them to a higher purpose to serve and protect their fellow citizens," said Spitzer.SPERRHONOR2007-10-09-1191965464.jpg

Also honored with the Police Officer of the Year Award was Trooper Joseph Corr. He was the New Hartford police officer also killed in the line of duty last year.
