Scholastic Arts Spotlight - William Cho

When William Cho plays the violin, it looks like he's connected to the music, and that's because he is! One of his favorite pieces is Brahm's Concerto for Violin. " My greatest thing is playing passionately," says Cho. "Just outright and deep into it and that piece is just everything I could ask for. Even the soothing passages. It's just very calm and very beautiful. I really love it."
 
And the world really loves Cho! He won first prize at an international music competition in Bulgaria, and he's played with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He's also a natural leader among fellow students at the Hochstein School of Music and Dance. " He plays with a lot of poise well beyong his years," says teacher Patricia Sunwoo. "I think he has a lot of poise and he plays with such drama it makes your hair stand up on your arms. It's a real pleasure to work with him."

Cho is a straight A student at Brighton High School. He hopes to attend Yale or Georgetown, with an eye on political science. But he'll never give up music. Passion for that runs in the family. His mother often accompanies him on the piano. Cho says, "I actually started on piano from my mom and most of my expressions come from listening to CD's a lot with my mom so she understands how I want to express it.  And even if I don't know how to describe it in detail she'll kind of expect how I'm going to play."
