wegmans2007-09-17-1190076984.JPGAttention shoppers, it's safe to go back to the pet food aisle at Wegmans, that's according to the grocery giant. In the Spring, Wegmans pulled as many as 20 different types of wet dog and cat food from its shelves after a massive pet food recall.

About three months after the massive pet food recall, Wegmans now requires pet food suppliers to undergo strict testing of ingredients. The grocery giant sent a team to a Menu Foods plant in New Jersey to make sure the new supply is safe for sale. Menu Foods is a major supplier of pet foods for Wegmans.

After the new supply was deemed safe, Wegmans started restocking varieties of wet dog and cat food under the names Bruiser Preferred Cuts and Wegmans Pouch products.

It was discovered soon after the recall, an ingredient, wheat gluten was contaminated with melamine. The tainted wheat gluten came from China. Wegmans also says not only are the new batches safe, Menu Foods is no longer getting wheat gluten from China. It's now getting the ingredient from domestic or European sources.

Wegmans announced the resale of these products on its website.

"Hundreds of shoppers told us how betrayed they felt. There's small solace that our own brand was one of many recalled; we have worked to figure out what happened, and more importantly, to keep it from happening again," said Mary Ellen Burris, the Senior Vice President of Consumer Affairs for Wegmans.

There are more than 90 class action suits filed against Menu Foods after the recall.

The pet food supplier has established a hotline for customers with questions. That number is 1-866-895-2708.
