CUTTHEVIOLENCE2007-09-17-1190070712.jpgCommunity leaders met today to talk about ways to cut violent crime.

At a public forum outside on

Jefferson Avenue
residents zeroed in on the idea of a safe haven list. The program allows children and adults who may have witnessed a crime to go to the neighborhood businesses on the list to report tips. The businesses will then pass that information along to police.

"The police department needs as much help as it can get, says Monroe County Legislator Willie Lightfoot. “We as elected officials need help...it is a community effort. It's gonna take everybody not just one person, but everybody in the community to deal with this."

Organizers of this forum helped start a program called Cut the Violence. They say it's helped more than 400 families in Rochester.
