GENESEEDEPUTY2007-09-17-1190063677.jpgPolice say 59-year old Deborah Vasi was delivering newspapers along Colby Road early Sunday morning when her car collided with a Genesee County Sheriffs Office car driven by Deputy Jason Saile. “She was delivering newspapers at the time and she was on the opposite side of the highway, “said Sheriff Gary Maha. Sheriff Maha says Deputy Saile was on his way to an emergency at the time. “He had his red lights on proceeding to this emergency when he came over the crest of a hill, there was a car in his lane of traffic and he tried to swerve to miss the car but unfortunately he collided with the vehicle,” said Maha.  Maureen Hilbert lives on Colby Road. She was awakened by the sound of the cars colliding. “I came outside and that's when I saw the car upside down on their front lawn and all of the sudden I spotted the sheriffs car on my side lawn,” said Hilbert. Another neighbor Jim webb says when he came outside to help Deputy Saile he had already gotten out of his vehicle and was on his way to assist Vasi. “He tried to go over to the car and help her but unfortunately it was too late,” said Sheriff Maha. Sheriff Maha says it appears Deputy Saile did everything he could to avoid the accident but the speed he was traveling combined with the darkness and hilly road made it nearly impossible. “As he came over the hill that's where she was she was on the other side of the crest. So there’s no way he could avoid striking her,” said Maha. Deputy Saile was treated and released. The New York State Police are investigating the accident.
