Lead Free By 2010 Campaign

LEADPAINTA2007-09-05-1189028690.jpgThe number of kids poisoned by lead paint in Rochester has plummeted in the last ten years. In 1995, 3,000 kids were poisoned by lead. Last year that number was just over 500.


Lead paint is in a lot of Rochester's older homes. One of the goals of the "Lead Free By 2010 Campaign" is to give homeowners and landlords grants to get rid of the paint and education on how to go about it.


John Urban of the Greater Rochester Health Foundation says, "One of the issues both landlords and homeowners face today is even when they are aware that there's a problem, it is sometimes difficult to negotiate through the maze in order to get access to resources financial, and otherwise to solve the problem."


The lead-free effort is concentrating on the 14621 zip code in Rochester. That's near School 22.
