The Battle of Braddock Bay

braddock22007-08-31-1188600005.jpgA recent News 8 Now story about how Braddock Bay will apparently soon become land-locked from Lake Ontario is generating a call for action from both boaters who can no longer access the Lake from the Bay,...and neighbors who fear the value of their property values will fall because of it.

Sand is quickly filling in the mouth of the bay, and while that is a natural occurance the problem has been exacerbated due to a decision by the Greece Town government a few years ago to cease dredging a boat chanel between the two bodies of water.

As it stands now the water is now at a depth ranging from a few inches to less than two feet meaning all but the smallest watercraft can pass. Continued inaction will inevitably lead to Braddock Bay becoming a lake or pond.

Marina owners on the bay have been beset by an exodus of boaters willing to rent slips, seeing occupancy rates in some cases fall from 90% a few years ago to about 10% today.

As they struggle to stay in business we have two new reports tonight.

One concerns Bayfront residents who seek to have their property assessments lowered, due to the fact they currently pay higher taxes for the "lake access" they will soon no longer have.

Our seond reports explores what long term solution --if any--can be found to keep Braddocks a bay, preserving it as what some call a boater's paradise.
