CAMERASCOMINGA2007-08-22-1187793650.jpgSurveillance cameras on public streets in Rochester is not a new idea. It was first proffered by former Mayor Bill Johnson. But it was only recently , with an influx of State and Federal grants, that the idea looked like it might finally come to fruition.
It did tonight, when City Council-members unanimously approved spending $1,500,000.00 for up to 75 cameras, the first 28 of which are scheduled to go up in high crime neighborhoods by mid November.

There are still opponents to the plan who have concerns over privacy and just what else police might be monitoring besides potential criminal activity.
