Surveillance cameras on public streets in Rochester is not a new idea. It was first proffered by former Mayor Bill Johnson. But it was only recently , with an influx of State and Federal grants, that the idea looked like it might finally come to fruition. It did tonight, when City Council-members unanimously approved spending $1,500,000.00 for up to 75 cameras, the first 28 of which are scheduled to go up in high crime neighborhoods by mid November.
