LEADPOISONINGLAW2007-08-17-1187386014.jpgNew York State is taking a tougher stand against lead-tainted toys. This week, Mattel announced a voluntary recall of nine million toys because many contain lead paint from china. That's the second such recall this month.

Governor Spitzer announced Friday several actions the state is taking to protect kids and parents. They include: mandatory and not voluntary removal of any recalled toys. The state will alert daycares and physicians of any recall and set up hotlines for parents. And, it's working on legislation to impose stiff fines for those who sell recalled products.

"Our concern is not enough has been done.  We must protect consumers.  We must say to the children of New York State, we will not let you be exposed to these types of products," says Spitzer.

About 5,000 kids each are diagnosed with lead poisoning in New York State. Lead poisoning can cause learning and behavioral problems.
