A judge suspended the driver's license of Rochester City Councilman John Lightfoot during his arraignment on drunk driving charges in city court Thursday morning. The 36-year old lawmaker pleaded not guilty to charges in connection with an incident on July 26th in which he rear-ended another car on 490.
Police later determined Lightfoot's blood alcohol content to be .14, which is nearly twice the legal limit.
Because this is Lightfoot's third DWI charge, he faces felony counts, conviction upon which would force his immediate removal from City Council, under the State Public Officers Law.
However, it was revealed Thursday, that Lightfoot could be admitted to a pre-trial alcohol diversion program. If he successfully completes the program, the charges could be dropped to misdeameanors, potentially saving his political career.
