POLICECAMS2007-08-15-1187216323.jpgThe City of Buffalo is already using surveillance cameras to patrol some of its high crime areas.

The cameras were installed on Buffalo city streets earlier this month. The city's mayor and police chief say the cameras are used strictly as crime fighting tools. The cameras are visible and are able to zoom in and even read car license plates.

Leaders hope the high tech cameras will ultimately help to deter crime.

“When a shot is fired, that will cause the cameras to turn around and focus in that direction,” says Buffalo Police Commissioner McCarthy Gipson.

Technology will allow the camera to tell the difference between a gunshot and fireworks.
