MIDTOWNATH.CLUB2007-08-10-1186786884.jpgAfter about a decade on the drawing board, it looks like things are just about "go" for a massive expansion of Rochester's Midtown Athletic Club.

Midtown will spend between 6 to 8 million dollars to expand its facility on

Highland Drive
. Plans call for 9 outdoor clay tennis courts, a 12,000 foot expansion of its existing indoor pool, construction of four new outdoor pools, and a more than 25,000 square foot deck and patio. The expansion will nearly double the size of Midtown's existing footprint.

Most of the expansion will occur smack dab in the middle of what is now a section of

Gould Street
in the city. To pull it off, though, the owners of Midtown had to negotiate the purchase of 10 homes here.

Midtown paid about 1 and a half million dollars to buy out the owners of the homes, the first of which would be demolished some time this fall.

Midtown is already one of the most popular athletic clubs in town, with 3500 members, its owners promising a facility the likes of which has never been seen in these parts, and which -- if all goes according to plan, should be completed by Memorial Day 2009.

Having already gotten approvals from both the city planning commission and zoning board, as well as the blessing of Mayor Duffy, the last step in all this is approval by the city council, which will vote on it August 21st.
