A one bridge town

BROCKPORTBRIDGE2007-08-03-1186179728.jpgNot too long ago if the Main Street Canal Bridge in Brockport was raised to let boats pass beneath, travelers could take one of two other nearby spans to beat the back up.

But last year those options were whittled to one when the Smith Street Bridge was declared structurally unsafe, and now the Park Avenue Bridge must be closed for 5 weeks or more due to needed repairs.

This will leave the "Historic Village on the Erie Canal" as a "One Bridge Town" for a period of time.

There are big concerns in this small town, primarily centered on public safety. Most worrisome is that the only remaining canal bridge for the duration of the work (Main Street) could be raised at the same time a fire call came in.

"It's a one in one thousand chance, but we have to be concerened nonetheless," said Village Trustee Hanny Heyen.

The Brockport Department has a contingency plan in effect to safeguard the public, while the Brockport School District has also mapped alternative routes for busses, and Main Street Merchants are also planning for what could be a bottleneck in Monroe County's Westernmost Village.
