cellphonesanddriving2007-07-19-1184842970.jpgSome downstate lawmakers are proposing legislation that would make text messaging while driving a car illegal in New York state.

The bill is being co-sponsored by Brooklyn Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, who was instrumental in passing New York's ban on cell phone use while driving 7 years ago.

The proposal comes just weeks after a fiery crash in Ontario County claimed the lives of five recent Fairport High School graduates.

Police say text messages had been sent and received on the driver's phone moments before the accident, although it's not known whether the driver was the person actually using the phone.
