BYRONBERGENSAS12007-06-21-1182462371.jpgIn our Scholastic Arts Spotlight, meet a talented singer from Byron-Bergen High School, who has her sights on a career in opera!

Rebecca Mosher says she's been singing since she could talk in full sentences. Opera is her love.

"It's very theatrical. I think it's because my voice isn't suited to sing country or pop or anything else, and I love singing high notes. It's just always come naturally," says Rebecca.

Rebecca is in good company at Byron Bergen High School. She belongs to the Singing Silhouettes....the school's select choir. Teacher Kathy White says it's unusual to have a student whose goal is to be an opera singer.

"Along the way we've had a lot of well-rounded musicians, but for opera, yes Rebecca's goal is a little different.  But we all appreciate it, because we've learned a lot of opera over the years listening to her," says Kathy.

Rebecca is a member of the Eastman Youth Chamber Singers, and is dedicated to her voice lessons at the Eastman Community Music School.

"Well I've taken lessons at Eastman for three, maybe four years but I've also taken a bunch of AP theory classes and I've learned piano and I've learned the trombone and I'm teaching myself guitar.  I have a wide musical background."

Her next step? Voice study at SUNY Fredonia. Graduate school after that, followed by a career in opera.

Even though the school year is over----we're already taking nominations for next school year. If you know a student who will be a senior in the fall----and who's doing great things in dance, music, theater or the visual arts, let us know! Just download an application by going to our website, rochesterhomepage.net.
