The flagship store is on Fifth Avenue where the windows have made an impact on the New York fashion scene for more than 90 years.
A Store of Firsts
Lord & Taylor is not only at the forefront in fashion but they've also set significant trends in the retailing industry. Lord & Taylor was the first retailer with the vision to move to Fifth Avenue - and the first to install an elevator. They were also the first to open a branch store, the first to develop the concept of offering personal shopping services and the first to create Christmas windows for pure delight rather than selling merchandise, a tradition that continues today.
And, perhaps their most significant first is that Lord & Taylor was the first store to have a woman as president. Dorothy Shaver was a visionary who made an impact on the emerging American fashion industry by showcasing the work of the American designers who truly shaped American style. Claire Maccardle, Bonnie Cashin, Norell Pauline Trigere, Luis Eztevez and Vera Maxwell all made their debut in our Fifth Avenue windows.
