For a school with as much history as a blink of an eye, University Prep began a new era of claiming basketball silverware with a 77-67 overtime win against Fillmore in the Class D1 final at Blue Cross Arena. It's the first sectional championship for the Griffins.

Marique Simkin took home MVP honors thanks to 23 points and 6 rebounds in the sectional final. Simkin also happens to be in 8th grade. Brandon Hunt scored 20 for UPrep, while Cameron Myles dropped 17 (along with 6 blocks) and Jordan Marshall added 12.

Jordan Mullen led all-scorers with 24 points for Fillmore. Kyle Redman's 15 points and Isaac Pelletier's 10 points were the only other scorers in double-digits for Fillmore.

University Prep found themselves down 29-23 at halftime, but outscored Fillmore 35-29 in the 2nd half which led to the game's extra session. University Prep went 4-5 from the floor in overtime and 11-14 from the free-throw line.

University Prep will Finney at Webster Thomas at 7:00 on Tuesday, March 5 in the Class D state tournament play-in game.
