Wings Crushed by IronPigs, Playoff Chances Shrink

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, on the way to an 8-1 win over the Red Wings Friday evening at Frontier Field. The Wings start a five game series at Buffalo on Saturday, a set that includes a doubleheader Sunday; watch each game live in Rochester on Time Warner Cable Sportsnet. The Red Wings return to Frontier Field on Thursday, August 30 for a two-game set against the Bisons.

P.J. Walters took the mound for his seventh rehab start since being placed on the 15 day disabled list. Walters entered the game with a 3-1 record and a 2.68 ERA while Tyson Brummett started for Lehigh Valley coming in with a 3-4 record and a 3.39 ERA

After a 1-2-3 inning by Walters and the Wings, Lehigh Valley took a 6-0 lead in the top of the second. The six runs were produced by seven hits. Cody Overbeck, Cesar Hernandez, Derrick Mitchell, and Jason Pridie all had hits for RBI's.

The Iron Pigs extended their lead in the top of the third when Andres Blanco hit an RBI single to score Michael Spidale, making the score 7-0.

After three innings Walters was relieved by Jeff Manship. Walters left the game allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs with one walk, and three strikeouts.

Brummett held a no hitter through 4 1/3 innings, but Chris Parmelee hit a single in the bottom of the fourth for the Red Wings' first hit of the game. The Wings were unable to score Parmelee as Wilkin Ramirez hit into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Brummett was relieved by David Purcey in the bottom of the sixth. In five innings of work Brummett only allowed one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.

The Wings scored their first run in the bottom of the sixth when Tsuyoshi Nishioka hit a double to score Ray Chang, who reached base on a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

In the top of the seventh Manship was relieved by Bobby Lanigan. Manship pitched three innings, with two hits, and one strikeout. With Lanigan pitching, Sebastian Valle hit a solo home run to left field making the score 8-1.

Wings hitting coach Tom Brunansky was ejected during the seventh inning stretch, and Ramirez was tossed after being hit by a pitch from David Purcey in the Wings half of the seventh.
