Updated: December 3, 2012
The East High girl's basketball team never let the anxiety of playing in uncharted territory get to them. By beating Averill Park 43-35 in the Class A state final, the Orientals are now the first Rochester city school girls basketball team to win a state title.

Things looked bleak in the opening quarter as senior forward Tanya Jones picked up her third foul less than 7 minutes into the game. The Orientals balanced attack helped them to a four point lead at halftime. Jones returned to the game in the second half and picked up 10 of her 12 points in the 4th quarter.

Rose Ayala was named the state tournament's MVP after chipping in 7 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 blocks. Aaliyah Dunbar was also a key contributor, scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds.
