A disturbing crime out of Clay, New York, where a man is facing charges in the rape of a child and the murder of a woman outside of a mall.
State Police say 29-year-old David Renz fatally stabbed 47-year-old Lori Bresnahan and raped a 10-year-old girl, after carjacking them at Great Northern Mall, north of Syracuse.
Police say there was no indication Renz knew the victims.
He is now charged with rape, kidnapping, and murder; all felonies.
Renz' face was covered as police led him out to jail because officers are still investigating.
State Police believe Renz approached Bresnahan and the child in the parking lot at Great Northern Mall as they were leaving a gymnastics class, around 9:00 Thursday night.
Captain Mark Lincoln of the New York State Police said "The suspect bound the woman and raped the child in their vehicle and then drove the car to Verplanck Road in the town of Clay. the child was able to flee from the victim and was assisted by a passing motorist."
Renz is also facing child pornography charges from 2012, when encrypted images were allegedly found on his computer.
The U.S. Attorney's office says he ripped off an electronic monitoring bracelet sometime before Thursday night's attack.
Helicopters and K-9 units were searching for a suspect when Renz was captured coming out the woods.
The young girl is recovering at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

I understand that he was beat up in the jail. Too bad it was not taken further and his genitals were ripped off. This man is an animal and his actions beg for the death penalty. I bet it happens in prision

This story is so sad and heartbreaking, and this child is not recovering. It will be years before she finds any sense of normal. Only God, and long suffering and dedicated family members can help her get there. I do however want to commend the writer of this article for giving the readers a clear, detailed and accurate account of this event and ALL of the crimes that were committed against this child and the family, and most importantly, the way that he committed them. This is in stark contrast to the sloppy and insensitive reporting done by some in Syracuse, leaving many in the public not knowing who was [censored] or the order of events of the crime. I believe this is important to help the public develop an informed opinion. And as we all know, they will develop an opinion. I know it is extremely difficult for a good journalist or reporter to cover or write about a crime of this nature, so thank you for accurately reporting the story. Truthrules
