  • What GM's Bankruptcy Means to Delphi in Rochester
    Reported by: Jason Frazer

    Monday, Jun 1, 2009 @06:50pm EDT

The bankruptcy filing will likely mean job cuts at GM's parts suppliers, such as Delphi, which has had its own share of troubles. The company has been operating in bankruptcy for the past three years.

News of GM's bankruptcy announcement wasn't surprising to the head of the local United Auto Workers union in Rochester.  At this point, it's unclear how GM's Chapter 11 will impact the auto parts maker, but with fewer cars being made, there will be fewer parts to produce.

90% of Delphi's business is making GM parts. Recently, GM announced plans to buy back the Rochester plants. Currently, there are 1,200 jobs locally. 600 of them are union workers.

"It looks like it will be really dicey for the rest of this year," said Dan Maloney, the president of Local UAW 1062.  "I'm sure there's going to be continued layoffs."

"Before we were actually told we were gonna be GM again, we didn't know if tomorrow we were gonna have a job, or if the plant is going to be closed on Monday," said Patrick Christopher, a union member.  "Now there's a little more security knowing that we're General Motors."

The union itself has had to make layoffs for the first time in history.  It recently cut a full-time officer and two part-time staff members.  Membership is also down 50%.
