  • Concerns Arise Over Shooting Suspect's Name Being Relea...
    Reported by: Evan Axelbank

Rochester police are still looking for the man they believed shot and killed a 40-year-old on the city's west side on Thursday. They released the suspect's name, something police rarely do before an arrest. The move has been criticized by people on the inside.

The name of Willis Clark was released at the shooting scene by the deputy chief, George Markert. Chief David Moore of the Rochester Police Department didn't criticize his deputy chief, yet says he doesn't know why Markert released his name.

The chief told News 8 that the safety of the public is often a deciding factor, although on Thursrday, cops insisted Clark wasn't a threat, even after police said he shot and killed Kevin Thomas. Chief Moore suspects that the officers who were on scene were hoping that releasing the name and description would lead someone to turn Clark in.

However, other sources, who are familiar with the investigation, say that Clark might be less likely to turn himself in, and that if he does, he'll most certainly do so with a lawyer.

"That's fine, that's absolutely fine. We have a wonderful system," said Chief Moore. "Whenever you have a murder suspect, who has a weapon, that leaves an area, it becomes very crucial to put as much information out as possible."

Clark still isn't in custody. The Chief said police are working with Clark's family to try to find him.
