Reported by: Jecoliah Ellis Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @06:19pm EST The H1N1 cases in the Rochester region continue to grow. Schools are seeing more students out sick. And businesses are also being targeted. Zenith Gym in Henrietta has seen enrollment drop recently. Usually it has 500 people walk through its doors every week. But on their worst day more than half of their customers were out sick. "Some practices there's a lot of kids and some there are not because they're sick," said Casey Sullivan, a gymnast. There's a strict policy students can only miss one session. But thanks to H1N1 that policy is out the window. They're scrambling to schedule make-up classes for kids. "It's mostly the burden of making up the classes finding spots in the other classes for the kids to be in. We don't want parents to feel pressure at all to bring kids back to early if they’re still a little sick, said Amy Norman, Zenith Gym Owner. The flu outbreak has made it hard to keep the place running. Even, gym instructors have been calling out of work too. "They've definitely come down with the flu and they've been out for days so that gets difficult," said Norman. The financial impact is not yet known, families pre-pay for the lessons. But, the impact of H1N1 is still very real. The key now, prevention and keeping the gym germ free. "Our front desk staff is actually walking around with cleansers and disinfectants regularly. (Floor) mats are wiped down regularly as we can. It's hard to keep up with a lot of kids who come through," said Norman. A lot of businesses are encouraging employees to stay home if they're sick. While this is putting pressure on daily operations the hope is it will stop the spread. |
