The bizarre death of a 21-year old man in Ontario County has been ruled a suicide. His body was found inside a car in Boughton Park in East Bloomfield. Police believe he died from inhaling fumes from ten gallons of toxic chemicals also found in the car. The chemicals caused evacuations and a Hazmat situation in the neighborhood.

DEC Lieutenant Dave Baker was the first to respond to Boughton Park Monday evening. "I could see heavy condensation in the windows obviously a misty cloud inside the vehicle," said Lt. Baker.

Lt. Baker immediately evacuated the area because fumes were seeping out of the car. "If someone had opened the door of that vehicle they very easily would have been overwhelmed by the vapors and may have very well been seriously injured or worse," said Lt. Baker.

Police say the 21-year old man mixed household chemicals inside his car.This created a deadly toxic gas. "There were containers in the backseat that had the substance. The level of this particular gas as it would affect a human being was extremely volatile and lethal when the chemicals were mixed," said Phil Povero, Ontario County Sheriff.

Things are returning back to normal in the neighborhood near the park. But everyone is rattled by the bizarre suicide. "This is such a nice secluded little area that we've really enjoyed living in to think something like this could happen is troubling," said Bonnie Kelly, a woman who lives near the park.

"It could have been a lot worse if the car blew up and somebody came to the use of park and it could have been tragic," said Ben Holmes, a Victor man who likes to fish at the park.

Sheriff Povero says the park is safe."There's absolutely no environmental impact as a result of this incident. There's no contamination in or around the area where this death."

There was concern from some that the water at the park was part of the drinking water supply for local municipalities. Investigators say that is not the case.

Neighbors were evacuated from their homes for 8 hours.Some of them are frustrated with the way police handled the situation. The sheriff says this was the first time something happened like this and they wanted to make sure neighbors weren't exposed to the fumes.

Police say the man lived in Ontario County. They're not releasing his name. Investigators are talking to the man's family to find out why he killed himself. They're also looking into specifically what kinds of chemicals were used.

Similar Death in Cayuga County - A similar death happened not to far from here in Cayuga County last Wednesday. There, a 22-year old man was found dead inside his car in a cemetery. Sheriff Povero said there is nothing to link the two cases. "We have been researching this type of death. It is obviously new to us."

In both cases there was a sign on the car warning people of the toxic chemicals inside."I don't think we've developed enough real clear data to say that this is something that is the sign of the trend," said Povero.

This was the first time Ontario County emergency crews dealt with a chemical suicide like this. In their debriefing the Sheriff is making sure deputies know how to handle this type of emergency. "Through this case and education maybe we can save a life in the future," said Povero.
