Reported by: Katrina Irwin Thursday, Oct 1, 2009 @10:02am EDT If you're thinking about going green at home. There's a chance for you to get some ideas this weekend. A green home tour is taking place across the country, and about 10 homes in the Finger Lakes Region are part of it. Ray Bahr's Henrietta home is just one stop on the green buildings open house tour. He uses the sun to help heat his water and power his home. "The house is a passive designed solar house, with lots of south facing glass," Bahr says. Bahr has also taken smaller steps inside his home. He has in-floor heating, uses compact fluorescent light bulbs, and has heavy blinds that help keep the heat out in the summer. He also has a bunch of batteries that store some of the energy he gets from the sun. "We're at the end of the utility line and in case we have an ice storm or something like that, we didn't want to have to buy a generator so we have a battery box system for emergency back-up power for several day and with the solar panels we can actually stay off grid for a while," adds Bahr. On Saturday, Bahr will open up his home to the public, so others will get a chance to see how he goes green. Chris Schaefer, the owner of Solar and Wind FX helped organize this local leg of the nationwide tour.
