Reported by: Katrina Irwin Thursday, Sep 24, 2009 @02:40pm EDT It's a first for the state. This weekend a "green" habitat for humanity house will be unveiled in Rochester. 314 Campbell Street is paving the way in green design. It's a habitat for humanity house, that keeps the environment in mind. The house is leed certified, which means it passes a strict environmental test. "It's a scoring system developed by the U.S. green building council really with the goal of providing leadership in how structures should be designed and built in the future," says John Cake, and Architect with Hunt Engineers. Some of the green features include; compact fluorescent lightbulbs, a tankless water system and soybean insulation. This was a joint effort done by the American Institute of Architects, and the American Council of Engineering companies. "Habitat homes to a great deal comply with the principles of sustainable design and construction. They're small, meant to be affordable and don't use a lot of materials and in this case, in an urban environment re-use and existing site," says Cake. |
