  • Fit Kids: Garth Fagan Dance Classes
    Reported by: Bob Metcalfe

    Wednesday, Sep 16, 2009 @05:50pm EDT

It's a dance class where age has no boundaries.

"Its like a dance hip hop class," said Shannon Burrows, an aspiring dancer.

MVP Health Care and Garth Fagan Dance have thought up an exciting way to get parents and children moving, together.

Organized dance classes provide a benefit that other types of activities may not.

"If they're just running around the block, they're not as coordinated as if they were taking a dance class. Dance uses all the body, all dimensions, and uses space," said Natalie Rogers-Cropper of Garth Fagan Dance.

"Some of its hard, some of its easy. It's really fun," said Shannon.

Kids will benefit in a wide variety of ways, both mentally and physically.

"Strength, mobility, flexibility, musicality, their brains are always functioning in a dance class like this," said Rogers-Cropper.

Already have an active kid? Dance may provide a benefit that their current activities may not offer.

"The stiffest of kids can suddenly become flexible and loose, and the flexible loose ones who are always injuring their knees and ankle get stronger," said Rogers-Cropper.

If your child may be a little unsure, or on the shy side, they have a method to get them going too.

"Show me what you can do, and all kids respond to that," said Rogers-Cropper.

So what is the attraction, and why is dance so well received by children?

"The best element of dance is music. You have music that they like, that they enjoy and then they're moving to it, and part of the discipline of dance is that they have to keep to the music," said Rogers-Cropper.

"I just think of it as fun," said Shannon.
