Reported by: Bob Metcalfe Wednesday, Jun 24, 2009 @07:40pm EDT "My father always used to say that idle time is good work for the devil, or something to that effect," said Malik Evans, the president of the Rochester City School District school board.
It's been shown kids fall behind in reading and math because of summer break, and its easy to see why. Kids go from months of structured learning to all-day free time. "We have a lot of kids that are just watching television everyday, kids sitting home by themselves, even engaging in negative behaviors," said school superintendent Jean-Claude Brizard. This summer, the Rochester City School District and the city of Rochester are teaming up with a host of free activities. The goal is not only only keep mentally active, but physically too. The partnership includes activities at rec centers, camps, and community centers. And it's all free. There's also the Jump Into Fitness summer camp, which offers free nutrition, exercise, kids can enjoy aerobics, hiking, swimming, soccer, kickball, tennis and even more. All this info can be found by dialing the city hotline, 311. |
