    Reported by: Meghan Backus

Three people are in the Genesee County Jail Friday morning after an Elba bank robbery and subsequent manhunt.

26-year-old Dennis Abrams, Jr., 25-year-old Demone Dillion and 24-year-old Michael Wells.  All of them are from Buffalo.

Police say the three robbed an M&T Bank in Elba around 10 a.m. Thursday.  A manhunt followed when the suspects tried to get away in an SUV.  They headed for the Batavia-Oakfield townline.

Schools in Genesee County were locked down because of the manhunt.  They caught two early on in the search, but took nearly five hours to find the third, Michael Wells.

Police believed he could have a weapon.

“We have to run under the belief that the information we have is that he is armed,” said Christopher Cummings with the New York State Police.

Police say three men robbed the M&T Bank using two handguns. They took off in an SUV heading south on Route 98 toward the thruway.

“They dropped two guys off here and the vehicle continued south on Route 63,” said Gary Maha, the Genesee County Sheriff.

Police immediately caught one suspect near Oakfield. An hour later, police found a second man off Route 63. They escorted him out of a wooded area in handcuffs.

By noon, troopers lined the thruway keeping an eye out for the third suspect.

Police searched an area of about five miles. They warned neighbors to stay inside and lock their doors.

The search was a challenge in the rural community.

“You can see a lot of open fields open, roadways and a lot of places people can hide in trees and wooded areas," Maha said.

But police eventually caught up with wells around 2:45 p.m. Police took him into custody about a half a mile from their command post.

“We all worked together,” Cummings said. “Without resources, we couldn't do our jobs."

State police, sheriffs departments from Genesee and Erie counties and the border patrol assisted in the search.

There is no word yet on how the third suspect was caught.
