Reported by: Evan Axelbank Friday, Jun 5, 2009 @04:55pm EDT The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says a man who lived in this apartment complex on Empire Boulevard in Penfield was booking more than three appointments for prostitutes everyday.
Police say Gary Bowman used two classified websites, Craigslist and RochesterBackPage.com, to book five hundred dates with hookers since January. "I think with the prevalence of the Internet, obviously it's a medium that people can easily access," said Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn. The Sheriff says they worked with an informant to bring the ring down. It included several alleged prostitutes, including 27-year-old Audrey Reinecke. Sheriff O'Flynn says the money being made from the ring was likely in the thousands of dollars. Many of the appointments were in hotel rooms. "To be handled the way it was, out of a hotel room, I mean apartment, and coordinated through Craigslist, in the local media, is something that did concern us, but we think we really addressed it quickly," said O'Flynn. These arrests come as attention on Craigslist is increasing. A sheriff in Illinois sued Craiglist in March for promoting prostitution. And just today, a Queens woman was booked for running a Craigslist prostitution ring. "I think we're going to see more of this as we delve deeper," said O'Flynn. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says more arrests of prostitutes are possible. |
