For many teens, being able to drive is a right of passage.

"You're just the man. You get to go around.. more freedom," says 16 year old Jimmy Mele.

Joella Mele has two teenagers in her house. She makes the message to them clear:  Be safe and dont drive so fast.

    "You worry; Anything can happen."

Ford is hoping its latest invention will make sure teens listen. It's called the My-Key system.

"Its to help parents encourage their teen drivers to drive safer, to drive more fuel efficient and to encourage them to use their seat belt," says Jim Tobin of Ford Motor Company.

With MyKey, parents can program the car to ensure their teenage drivers are obeying the law.

"For instance, if the MyKey is activated, you cant go more than 80 miles per hour. In addition, you can set various chimes to alert your teen to how fast their going at a given time," says Tobin.

Most cars on the road have some sort of technology to let you know when your seat belt isn't on. But with the MyKey technology, it includes something a little bit extra. Not only will teens get an error message in the dashboard but their music will also be silenced. The music wont come back on and the error message wont go away until they buckle up their safety belt."

"It also is a way for new drivers to understand what they should be paying attention to while they're driving," says Tobin.

In August, MyKey will be available on all new 2010 Ford Focus models. Ford says it will eventually be standard on all of its cars and trucks. Mele says the technology may make her more willing to give her son, Jimmy the keys to the family van but:

"Well you are still going to worry because there's other people on the road that dont have that. So I dont think it will take that total worry away."
