89 medical students at the University of Rochester got a sneak peek into their futures Thursday. It was Match Day for the soon to be graduates. Students pick their top three choices of where they want to intern. The results were revealed just before noon.
They're anxious but they're not showing it. Ten minutes before they learn their fate they're taking pictures, telling stories and showing off their kids. These medical students at the U of R are about to find out where they'll be doing their residencies. Waiting for this day has been a lifelong journey for Cindy Duke. Cindy is an immigrant from the island Tobago. She's wanted to be a doctor since she was eight years old. "What I'm feeling basically is this anxiety. There's this knot in my stomach. I'm just trying to keep breathing. Stay calm," said Cindy Duke. Cindy was extremely nervous when it came time to open her envelope. "I got John Hopkins my first choice. Yes!" Cindy broke into tears she was so emotional. "Everyone said that I was probably going to get my top choice but I didn't believe (it) quite frankly," said Cindy. Others got good news too. Matt Swenson's wife wasn't with him for the big moment. But she had a valid excuse. "She's in labor yes. I snuck down to get the letter. I'm going to go open it up with her hopefully its a day of exciting news," said Matt. And it was. The soon to be dad got first choice too. He's going to the University of California at Davis. When the baby's born her name will be Helen Isabelle Swenson. Orren Wexler and Erika Levy fell in love their first year of medical school. They did a couples match so they would end up at the same medical center. They got matched with the U of R. Now they're going to get married and buy a house in Rochester. "We're really excited we're staying here. It was our first choice," said Erika. Cindy is glad she went to Medical School in Rochester. Now she's focused on becoming the doctor she dreamed of. |
