As cold & flu season nears it's peak, it won't cost you anything for some prescription relief.

Wegmans is dropping the charge for generic oral antibiotics from now until flu season drops off.  The Rochester-based supermarket chain announced Tuesday that there would be no charge for a 14-day supply of some of the most prescribed antibiotics.  All you need is a Shoppers Club card.

    Why is Wegmans doing this?

"We understand the economic pressures families are facing, including the rising cost of health care, which is something I'm especially concerned about," said CEO Danny Wegman in a statement. "We hope this program will help families better cope with those expenses."

    The prescriptions available are:
    • amoxicillin
    • cephalexin
    • sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim
    • ciprofloxacin (excluding ciprofloxacin XR)
    • penicillin VK
    • ampicillin
    • tetracycline
    • erythromycin stearate and ethylsuccinate
    • doxycycline hyclate (in capsule form).

Wegmans estimates the program will save customers at it's 72 stores a total of approximately $1 million.
