Reported by: Maureen McGuire Tuesday, Dec 2, 2008 @12:30am EST Forty years ago this week, fire broke out at St. Monica's Church in Rochester. The damage was contained to a general storage area, but firefighters said it could have been much worse, were it not for the quick actions of an organist who smelled smoke. The cause of the fire? A wooden taper that had been used to light church candles, re-ignited not soon after it was discarded. Meantime this week in 1968, Rochesterians were picking up from the damage caused by gusty winds. Tree limbs came down, and so did power lines. Large plate glass windows were even blown out of some downtown buildings. Thirty years ago this week, a devastating fire ripped through the Holiday Inn Hotel on Ridge Road in Greece. Ten people were killed, and 34 injured. Many of those who survived ended up smashing out windows and jumping to safety. The fire was later determined to be arson, and started in the area of a basement storeroom. Twenty years ago this week, consumer advocates were out with their annual list of dangerous toys. Click on the video to see why Paddington Bear, the "snow fury" sled, and a Fisher Price fishing pole were on the list. |
