Reported by: WROC-TV Tuesday, Nov 11, 2008 @12:59am EST Forty years ago this week - a store promotion in downtown Rochester got started with a bang from this 300-year-old swedish cannon. The historic cannon would be moved into Midtown Plaza for a special exhibit. Meantime this week in 1968, Channel 8's cameraman got an inside look at what was then a Rochester institution - the Bernzomatic corporation. The company made everything from camp stoves to fire alarms, catalytic converters and hand torches. One year after these pictures were taken - Bernzomatic moved its manufacturing plant out of Rochester to Medina. Twenty years ago this week, residents of the upper Mount Hope neighborhood were criticizing Wegmans. They claimed the store was neglecting its Mt. Hope store in favor of the newer, bigger superstores in the suburbs. To hear what the neighborhood wanted to see, click the "Watch" button. The store eventually closed in 2005. Now, the East Avenue store is the only Wegmans store located inside the city of Rochester. Ten years ago this week, the FBI closed a church on Dewey Avenue in Rochester because of an anthrax scare. Someone sent the church a letter saying they'd been exposed to anthrax. Three employees underwent decontamination, but the threat turned out to be a hoax. It was one of a series of letter anthrax scares across the country that year. |
